PSV Eindhoven – FK Senica 1-0 (0-0)
The match between the Dutch team and the Slovak opponents set off with a brisk pace though the first minutes were spent by the teams just getting to know each other. Nonetheless, Senica started out better, most of the playing occurred during the first minutes on Eindhoven’s half of the pitch without any real opportunity though. By the end of the first quarter of an hour PSV gained dominance and this was also when the first more serious chance was created as Senica’s keeper left his goal at the wrong time to meet a ball that had appeared to be too long from Verreth into the centre, but nobody arrived on time near the goal area. Ten minutes later PSV had another opportunity as Rigo took a free kick from about 25 metres but Száraz confidently saved. not much later Catic made it alone with the ball into the box, dribbling past a number of Slovak defenders to shoot from 13 metres but the keeper Száraz made an excellent save. The ensuing corner kick was headed towards the goal by Verreth but the ball missed the target. The 36th minute saw the game’s greatest opportunity so far, when Verreth’s header slammed the crossbar after a set piece from the right flank.
After the first half without a single goal, the second half continued to be dominated by Eindhoven, nonetheless, it was Senica that could have taken the lead after a counter-attack when Fako’s fine shot was saved by the keeper Mikkelsen. Daneels took a shot from 10 metres in the 54th minute but Száraz was, as ever, firmly in position again. Six minutes later Schoonbrood broke away with a superb pass, ending up facing only the keeper who managed to make yet another magisterial save. In the 63rd minute however, even the goalkeeper Száraz was helpless as Matthias Verreth headed the ball into the centre of the goal from a superbly centred corner kick, putting PSV ahead. Eight minutes later it was PSV again to have an opportunity, as Daneels received another well-played ball but shot outside the post at close range. Three minutes before the final whistle Hattu headed towards the Slovak goal, slightly missing it. Eventually, Eindhoven won an entertaining, fine quick game 1-0.
