NK Maribor - PSV Eindhoven 0-5 (0-3)
The first great opportunity was missed by PSV’s Catic 6 minutes into the match. In response, Sorko curved the ball on target from the left but caused no difficulties for the keeper van Meulenhof. Bonde took the ball in the 9th minute in Maribor’s half of the pitch and his cross was shot over the crossbar by Fernandez from a distance of about 18 metres. In the 12th minute Verreth fired from a similar distance which was cleared by Canjko with a diving save. It took hardly a minute for PSV’s number 9 to face another opportunity but the ball came in a little high and the header flew over the crossbar. PSV attacked their opponents right up at the 44-yard line but Maribor was not disheartened and created an opportunity in the 16th minute when Juric took a shot on target, though the ball went right into the centre of the goal to be easily caught by the keeper. Daneels’ superbly centred ball was headed into the net by Verreth but the assistant signalled offside. PSV’s dominance was converted into a goal when Fernandez laid the ball off to Daneels sprinting up on the left flank who then shot it with his left foot into the far corner of the goal. In the 31st minute the Slovenian squad nearly equalised after Meulenhof’s ill-timed move out of his goal and Celar spun the ball past him in the middle of their half of the pitch but it left the field outside the goal. The 35th minute saw a very soft goal when PSV was given a free kick, Verreth shot from the centre at 17 metres, Canjko dived and caught the goal but then dropped it, behind himself, and into the net. And then the third Eindhoven goal was scored before half time, in the 39th minute Daneels took a left side corner kick which was headed back by Tanriver into the right corner.
Maribor changed keepers in half-time but not even Punodic could do nothing when in the 42nd minute Fernandez had a chance but much to the keeper’s luck the Dutch midfielder missed the target. In the 46th minute however, in another sitter for Eindhoven Punodic saved Daneels’ shot by his foot, a spectacular save. A minute later Banani had a chance but the ball he tossed towards the corner was cleared from before the goal line. PSV seemed to be able to create a chance whenever they wished to. In the 54th minute Theunissen broke away on the left flank, crossed the ball in but Hattu shot the ball over the crossbar. The substitute striker Hattu did not miss two minutes later however, when he used his chest to usher the ball behind the goal line after Banani’s high pass from the right wing. Maribor’s defence was extremely poor when in the 58th minute Daneels run without challenge up within close range of the goal, took a shot but it hit the goalkeeper. The Slovenian substitute keeper was up in the air again half minute later, saving a blast from Fernandez. The 61st minute saw one of the few Slovenian shots on target, but Medved’s attempt was intercepted by Meulenhof. The 67th minute brought on another PSV sitter, when Hattu received a superb pass and then shot the right post from the right side of the box. In the 77th minute Banani crossed the ball in with a bend from the left corner of the box which was then touched by nobody so it ended up in right corner of the goal. Maribor conceded five goals by the fine whistle but it could have been many more, as far as Maribor was concerned ...
